Mother's Day Craft Inspiration

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, there’s never been a better time to get the materials out and get crafting – here at StickyTiger, we think giving something made by hand is a great alternative to popping into the local supermarket and buying a bunch of flowers (not that we don’t love a good bloom!). From a simple felt corsage to colourful clay jewellery, we’ve come up with five great handmade gifts that will make your Mum feel like a million dollars.
A Felt Corsage
One of the simplest and most effective handmade gifts has to be an easy felt corsage; felt is a wonderfully versatile fabric and as it doesn’t fray, it needs absolutely no hemming or edging. The best thing about making these little beauties is that you can literally make it up as you go along – choose from our various coloured felt sheets, cut out your petal shapes and away you go. The finish can be as simple or as detailed as you like; think hand-stitched felt leaves, ribbon and haberdashery details and little areas of beading to make your gift a truly unique one.
From tulips to forget-me-nots, plants and flowers are one of the most traditional Mother’s Day gifts there are – but even though they look lovely on the day, they soon begin to wilt and look, well, a bit sad. While paper flowers might sound tricky, they’re actually a great alternative to the real thing, and also last a lot longer; there are plenty of tutorials on the internet that range from easy to advanced, and cover everything from a simple iris to a more complex pansy. Here at StickyTiger, we’ve got all your paper needs covered; choose from either plain or embossed bright colours, or pick an eye-catching print and make your flowers into a great table centrepiece.
A Beautiful Embroidery
From a cheery wall-hanging to a simple tote bag, embroidery is an easy peasy way to create a personalised gift, and can be as simple or complicated as you choose to make it. From simple running stitch and cross stitch, to more complex knots, the simple art of drawing with cotton can make a great gift. If you’re a complete beginner, we’ve got a few easy kits that come with simple instructions to help you create a project that your Mum will adore; the framed embroidered heart kit includes thread in two colours and a frame to finish your work, while the embroidery mobile makes the perfect decorative gift for any kitchen.
A Personalised Cushion
When people say ‘personalised’, they often automatically think of names, dates and initials, but it actually simply means giving a gift which has some sort of personal relevance; think a tea towel embroidered with plant names for a gardener, or a handmade card stamped with the image of a vintage teacup for tea lovers. A cushion is a great gift to give, as it can be not only beautiful but practical too – home wares have never been more popular, and it’s never been easier to make your own. Either make a simple envelope cushion cover, or buy a neutral coloured blank one, then decide on your design before choosing your accent fabric – our Artemio fabric comes in a great range of patterns and is ideal for using in appliqué. Cut out your shapes, and then iron some Bondaweb onto the reverse, before placing onto your cushion cover and heat sealing in place. It’s as easy as that!
If your Mum is a fan of accessories, why not whip up a simple pendant or necklace for her this Mother’s Day? With a huge range of clay, moulds and jewellery accessories on the market, making your own has never been easier, and here at StickyTiger we’ve got everything you could possibly need. Think bright and colourful with our FIMO or crafters clay, or opt for the Artista super light air dry clay and then get the paint brushes out to add a few small details. If you’re not too good with modelling, don’t worry – we’ve got plenty of moulds and texture sheets to help you along, and even a complete Heirloom starter kit for complete beginners.
